Planned around the table,
not the television.
A family apartment in Friedrichshain, Berlin, home to parents and young children. They wanted it colourful and cosy, and above all a home that made more of their time together.
Before the redesign the flat worked, but not well. The rooms lacked warmth and interest, several of them did not really do their job, and nothing in the layout encouraged the family to spend time together.

a reason to gather.
A colourful, cosy home that gave the family more reason to be in the same room, with every room earning its keep.
The clients hired us to work remotely. They sent the measurements of each room, and the design was built from those, room by room, without anyone from the studio setting foot in the flat.
Conversation first,
the television second.
Rather than arranging the living space around a screen, the layout was planned for conversation and togetherness, and the palette was built from natural materials, green and wood.
- A living space set up for company. A generous tan leather corner sofa facing into the room, armchairs and a round coffee table, with plants throughout to soften the white walls.
- A mint-green kitchen with warm wood. Green base units under wood-grain wall cupboards, a marble-look splashback, and an oak dining table with sage chairs where the family eats together.
- Children’s rooms with room to play. Raised beds free up the floor for desks, storage and play, with colour brought in through rugs, walls and accessories.
- A crisp shower room. Marble-look tiles, black fittings and a walk-in shower, kept simple so it is easy for a busy household to live with.
Most living rooms end up arranged around the television by default. Deciding at the start that this one was for talking changed where the sofa went, what faced what, and how the family used the room.
How this project ran.
The whole home was designed remotely with our room makeover packages, working from the measurements the clients sent. If you are in Berlin and would rather we took the measurements ourselves, we can visit for a separate fee.
