A riverside apartment with good natural light and long views over the water, held back by a traditional layout that closed the kitchen off from the living space.
The owner wanted it opened up into one modern kitchen and living space. A contemporary industrial scheme suited the flat: it makes the most of the light and the views, and it holds its own in a large open room.
A new kitchen, a new plan,
and one team to build it.
The brief covered the whole renovation: a new kitchen with room for breakfast and for dining, fresh layouts for lighting and electrics, custom furniture, updated wall decoration, and a contractor the owner could trust to build it.
That last point shaped the project. Rather than handing over drawings and stepping back, we ran it end to end: design, coordination, procurement and installation, with the building work carried out by one of our partner contractors.
Raw edges, refined
for everyday living.
The layout came first, then the scheme: an industrial palette of darker tones and metal finishes, softened with warmer materials so the open room feels characterful rather than cold.
- The kitchen opened to the room. The traditional layout was reworked so kitchen, dining and living share one open space, with the daylight and the river views reaching all of it.
- Room to eat twice. The new kitchen was planned with a spot for breakfast as well as a proper dining area, so neither has to double as the other.
- Lighting and electrics redrawn. New layouts to suit the new plan, with lighting treated as part of the design rather than an afterthought.
- Furniture made to fit. Custom pieces commissioned for the space, alongside updated wall decoration to finish the rooms.
The build was interrupted by the national lockdown during the pandemic, and the apartment was still finished after eight weeks. With the design, the contractor and the procurement run by one team, there was one place for every question when work stopped and restarted.
How this project ran.
The owner lived close enough to work with us on site. We handled the design, then ran the project through design coordination and procurement, with site visits, contractor meetings and online tools that let the owner follow progress without taking time off work.
