NEUTRAL BATHROOM

Refresh family bathroom

INITIAL DISCUSSIONS

While delighted with the size of their bathroom, our client desired a bright, more contemporary look akin to a boutique hotel. Our Akiva design specialist worked directly with the homeowner to design a complete solution for their bathroom that enhanced the natural light and instantly told a story of luxury the moment fixtures came into view.

HOW WE ACHIEVED IT

To start, our designer planned a practical yet appealing bathroom that used clean lines and modern tiling to reflect light. Then, our designer chose brushed brass for the fittings to provide a luxurious complement to the neutral tones. Lastly, recessed cabinetry added even more space to the already large bathroom, capitalising on the boutique hotel feel desired for the finished look. These elements were worked into 2D designs and matched with a procurement list which allowed the final design to be realised effortlessly.

BEFORE

Prior to undertaking this redesign, the homeowners complained that the existing bathroom was dated, darkened and gave off the wrong first impression with a lacklustre built-in bathtub visible from the corridor. As such, our brief was to refresh this space with simple, clean lines and functional pieces to evoke memories of boutique hotel stays abroad.

The Neutral Bathroom project by Studio Akiva is a refined study in restraint, where simplicity becomes the foundation for a quietly luxurious and highly functional space. Designed with a focus on calm and clarity, the scheme demonstrates how a neutral palette can be elevated through texture, proportion, and thoughtful detailing rather than bold colour.

At its core, the design embraces a soft, tonal palette layering warm whites, gentle beiges, and muted stone finishes to create a cohesive and timeless backdrop. Rather than relying on contrast, the space is defined by subtle variation in materials, allowing surfaces to interact in a way that feels both natural and intentional. This approach reflects a broader design principle that neutral interiors succeed through texture rather than colour alone.

Material selection plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere. Marble-effect tiling, soft matte finishes, and understated fixtures contribute to a sense of understated elegance, while carefully integrated details, such as recessed niches and minimal joinery—ensure that functionality is seamlessly embedded within the design. Even within a compact footprint, the space is designed to feel open, considered, and quietly indulgent.

Lighting is treated with equal precision, enhancing the softness of the palette while adding depth and dimension. Rather than harsh illumination, the scheme leans into layered lighting creating a more ambient, spa-like environment that reinforces the sense of calm.

The overall composition is deliberately uncluttered, with clean lines and integrated storage maintaining visual clarity. Every element is reduced to its essential form, allowing the space to feel both modern and timeless, functional yet elevated.

Ultimately, the Neutral Bathroom is an exercise in balance and discipline. It proves that a minimal palette, when executed with care, can deliver a space that feels sophisticated, serene, and enduring transforming an everyday room into a considered retreat.
